Major General Qasem Soleimani or Ghasem Soleimani (11 March 1957 - 3 January 2020 Persian: قاسم سلیمانی) is a senior Iranian military officer in the Islamic Revolution Guards Force (IRGC) and since 1998 has been the commander of the Quds Force - a division responsible for extraterritorial operations from Iran. He is a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war, and has been active in various Middle Eastern conflicts, especially in Iraq and Sham. The method he uses is a combination of military intervention with the cultivation of ideology and a stubborn diplomatic strategy. Quds forces have long provided military assistance to Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Palestinian Territories. Soleimani has always had political and military influence in Iraq through Shiite and Kurdish political parties, who rebelled against Saddam in the 1991 Iraqi Insurgency. Iran has armed and assisted rebels against Saddam. In 2012, Soleimani assisted the Syrian government, an important ally of Iran, during the Syrian Civil War. Soleimani also assisted the joint command of the Iraqi government and Shia militia forces against the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (NIIS) in 2014-2015.
Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in a US air strike on January 3, 2020 near Baghdad International Airport. The air strike was a retaliation to the attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad allegedly carried out by Iranian-backed militias.
