On January 3, 2020, the United States launched an air strike on a convoy of vehicles near Baghdad International Airport where several people were traveling, including Major General and Quds Commander iran Qasem Soleimani and Iraqi People's Mobilization Commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

The attack came after the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and after the Persian Gulf crisis. In the week before the attack, an Iraqi air base was attacked, killing a US contractor. A few days later, the US embassy in Iraq was damaged during a protest. The US blamed Iran for this incident.

The attack sharply increased tensions between the US and Iran. Iranian leaders vowed to take revenge on the United States while US officials said they would first attack Iranian-backed paramilitary groups in Iraq which they considered a threat.

Republicans in the US largely supported this attack, as did Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Democratic Party in the US acknowledged Soleimani's mistake in killing Americans, but questioned the wisdom of provocative attacks that would increase tension in the Middle East. Syrian officials condemned the attack, and representatives from China, India, Pakistan, France, Germany and the United Kingdom urged all parties to exercise restraint and diplomacy. (Wiki)
